The U.S. Air Force has formally designated the demonstrator engines for the Adaptive Engine Transition Program (AETP) as the XA100 and XA101 - with the XA100 to be built by General Electric and the XA101 to be built by Pratt & Whitney. The XA engine designation indicates the "adaptive" nature of this next generation of jet engine, in contrast to the XF engine development designations used for previous generations of turbofan fighter engines.
